analog playground for kids
Last summer, on my way to a dance class, an idea for a workshop finally crystallized in my head. It was not a brand new idea for me since I had been thinking about it for a few years (and in no way it is a novel thing), but it was finally clearer to me how I could make it happen. That night, whilst my dancer friends were practicing a new choreo, I eagerly typed my idea down on my Notion page.
Showing the analog photography world to children is something that has always made me really excited. Every time I gifted a child a disposable camera for a birthday or Christmas, the joy of discovery on their faces was priceless. I absolutely love observing them eagerly looking through the viewfinder, impatiently trying to find the object or subject for their next image and intuitively feeling out where their next shot is. Gifting someone an opportunity to capture the moment in life through a lens feels rewarding and important, especially someone who has not yet been shaped by prejudgment and who can, with an open heart and an open eye, be whoever they are.
The very first analog photography playground for kids took place in November 2024 at the beautiful Jardins do Bombarda, on a storm-pregnant-cloud morning. We were lucky to have the workshop running before the skies went black later that afternoon.
With a wonderful group of nine talented children, we learned some basics about film, checked out some analog cameras and played with framing and light before getting hands-on and shooting a full film of images individually. It was a delightful time, and I cannot wait to continue playing photography together with the kids again.
